Research
Research plays an important role in improving how online learning environments are designed and supported. Current work focuses on accessibility, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and the experiences of faculty designing online courses in community college contexts.
Current Study
Faculty Experiences Designing Accessible Online Courses
This study explores how California Community College faculty experience designing and teaching online courses in relation to accessibility and inclusive learning practices. As expectations surrounding digital accessibility continue to evolve across higher education, faculty are increasingly being asked to navigate complex instructional, technological, and institutional demands while building and facilitating online courses.
Faculty with all levels of online teaching and accessibility experience are welcome to participate. Participants do not need prior formal accessibility training, nor do they need to consider themselves experts in online course design or accessibility. This study is not intended to evaluate faculty performance or audit courses. Rather, the goal is to better understand the lived experiences of faculty working within a wide range of institutional contexts, support environments, disciplines, and training backgrounds across the California Community College system.
The study recognizes that accessibility work in online education is often ongoing, evolving, and shaped by the realities of time, training, institutional support, and available resources.
